Harvest Calendar

Our year-round Market is home to lots of local food producers, including meat, dairy and egg farmers who are with us year-round.  Our cooks and bakers are with us rain or shine and our artisans' passions sustain them twelve months of the year.

But if you're looking for the best in local produce, you'll want to have an idea of when to realistically expect it.

From the beginning of the season in May right through till October you'll reliably find fresh-picked variety every time you visit the Market.  A number of our growers carefully store root vegetables and gourds so they can serve them at their own tables and share them with you at the Market through the winter months, and some greenhouse growers are extending the season to either side of the summer, but we don't like to over-promise. Don't forget that, summer and winter-long, our preservers' tables still groan under the weight of jewel-toned essences of the harvest!

Our harvest calendar is designed to give you an idea of what fresh local produce you'll find when you visit the Market and is dependent on the weather - talk to your vendors for a more educated forecast.

Through the winter months most greenhouse growers close, with a few, like Veg-e-tate Market Garden, pushing the envelope with cold-weather crops and specialty greens to bring you fresh flavours year-round.

In Thunder Bay, local winter produce includes things that can be stored easily and well, so while supplies last you'll find root vegetables like carrots and turnips; potatoes and cabbage available.  Supply depends on our farmers' storage capacity and their success with crops in a given year.
