The “Egg” Vendors!
Tarrymore Farms has been another one of our longtime vendors here at the market. In fact, they began vending with us only a year after the market opened, way back in 1998! And as the Thunder Bay Country Market now celebrates its 20th year, we consider it extra special to feature some of those vendors that have been with us along the way…
Upon mention of Tarrymore Farms’ booth, most may recall them as ‘the egg vendors’, but Bill and Jenny Groenheide, owners of Tarrymore Farms, assure us that they’ve got a lot more to offer than just their farm-fresh eggs!
Both Bill and Jenny grew up experienced in the field of agriculture. Together they began farming at Tarrymore Farms over 25 years ago, after taking over the farm that Jenny’s family owned and originally began. Located out in scenic South Gillies, just south of Thunder Bay, Tarrymore Farms is situated among rolling hills and quiet countryside. Its acreage provides an exceptional place for the Groenheides to raise their herd of beef while also housing their flock of chickens.
When Bill and Jenny first began selling their products at the market, they offered eggs and lamb, plus wool products from their own sheep. Since then, son Rob has taken over the sheep production (see our previous feature on Walkabout Farm), while Bill and Jenny ventured into raising a herd of beef cattle. Every Saturday, you’ll find farm-fresh eggs available from their free-run hens, as well as quality beef, sold in a variety of cuts including ground beef and sides. During the summer months, they also offer fresh produce from their garden plot that you can find at their separate outdoor booth. It won’t be long before you’ll be able to purchase farm-fresh veggies, hand-picked from the rich soil of South Gillies. Until then, Bill and Jenny are currently the only sellers of fresh, graded eggs at the market, but take pride in all of their products.
You’ll also find Tarrymore’s products on the menus of a few local eateries around town. Restaurants like Bight, Made Fresh and Cheers Pub use either their eggs, beef or both as part of their seasonal menus. Pinetree Catering also makes use of their quality beef. If you’re looking to purchase their products around town, your best bet is to visit them at the market. However, Slate River Dairy does retail their eggs as well.
At the market, you need not look far to find Bill and Jenny, or members of their family, happily waiting to serve their customers. Find them just around the corner from the main entrance, and check out their farm-fresh supply of goods, sure to be ‘egg-sactly’ what you’re looking for!
