A Tasty Alternative!
Those who don’t enjoy an occasional sweet treat are far and few. Baking has been a creative and tasteful way to satisfy human beings of all cultures for generations. It’s only fitting that the Thunder Bay Country Market’s lineup of vendors include a few very talented bakers, each bringing their own special treats to the table. And with the cooler weather soon to be upon us, we’ve decided to ‘indulge’ in choosing this week’s feature, Dee from Unique Alternatives, a small baking business with a reputation for amazing goodies!
Owner Dee has always been a baker at heart. In fact, she’s been with us at the market for quite some time. In the early stages of her 15 years with us, Dee began selling small home-made crafts and a few particular baking items. As the years went on, she leaned more to her baking talents, building up a solid reputation with her quality treats. Today, you’ll find everything from pies, loaves and breads, to tarts and cakes featured at the booth of Unique Alternatives. But act fast! With a solid regular client base, you’ll have to get to Dee’s stand early, before her ever-poplar fresh blueberry pies are sold out!
That’s right, Dee boasts the use of fresh, (and local!) fruits whenever possible in her famous fruit pies, which have become her biggest product seller over the years. In fact, Dee has no problem selling most, if not all, of her pies, come Wednesday or Saturday. Busy in her baking headquarters the rest of the week, Unique Alternatives has become a great source of quality, fresh baked goods within our community.
Among a few more of her hot seller products are her delectable butter tarts (and who doesn’t love butter tarts!). Also available for those who are looking for a treat with a little less sweet, Dee offers diabetic baking, reserved especially for those who need to limit their sugar intake.
Unique Alternatives has proven what it takes to establish a solid reputation within the baking business. And while Dee did have the opportunity to expand and retail her products more widely, she has chosen to only make her baking available at the weekly market. A decision she herself made in order to keep her business on a smaller, perhaps more enjoyable, scale. However, customers are always welcome to place custom orders at request, which Dee will be happy to fulfill.
You can find (and taste!) more of Dee’s goods, every Wednesday evening from 3:30pm to 6:30pm and again on Saturdays from 8:00am to 1:00pm and the market. She is located on the first floor, near the market kitchen, ready to serve eager customers who are looking for something a little “unique!”
