Cornell Farms – Providing the Region with Wholesome Meat Products

cornell02How far of a radius does “supporting local” encompass? Well, Cornell Farms, situated out in Devlin, Ontario, just outside of Emo and along the Ontario/Minnesota border, is just as keen on providing wholesome, local products as our vendors situated here in the Thunder Bay area. Not only does Cornell Farms provide the shoppers of the Thunder Bay Country Market with plenty of quality beef and chicken, but their products also make it out to many more of the other Northwestern Region markets!

Cornell Farms has been in the family of owners Kim and Pat Cornell for well over 100 years. Homesteaded by Kim’s great-grandfather in 1897, the original crops and herds he started out with included potatoes, sheep and a few other varieties of crops. In 1953, the family began to develop the cattle portion of the operation through purebred polled herfords, and in 1991 they added in a red angus cattle breed as well, to further specialize in quality meat production. Since Kim’s wife, Pat, already had experience growing up in a butcher shop providing wholesale and retail meats, they decided early on to expand in this area of business. Since then, Cornell Farms has become known for their quality beef products, and most recently, their specialty-raised chicken.

Cornell Farms is likely most known for their wide range of grass-fed beef products. These include sausages (Wild Rice, Hot Italian and All-Beef Brats), meat pies, regular and wild rice patties, marinated ribeye and tenderloin steaks, and cornell03their most popular product, lean ground beef. They also sell a variety of cold meat products – jerky, all-beef salami, kielbasa and pepperettes. One of their unique products that they’ve developed (and is only sold by them) is their all-beef summer sausage with cranberries. Made through their Mennonite friends in Southern Ontario, this specialty treat is made using a recipe they’ve developed, using their own beef. They also carry some smoked pork products from their local processor, and sell grain-finished beef by the side or pak. And of course, not to forget their newest enterprise, Artisanal Chickens. Last year, Cornell Farms was approved by Chicken Farmers of Ontario as one of 7 producers in Northwestern Ontario to raise these specialty chickens. They are raised free-range in their heritage barn with an outdoor run and fed grain grown right on the farm. This year, a total of 600 birds have been raised, and so far, the product has gone over very well throughout the region!

cornell01Cornell Farms has been with us at the market, selling their products since 2007, but have been at some of the other regional markets even longer, including Kenora, Red Lake and Sioux Lookout. Their products have become reputable within Thunder Bay and around the region of Northwestern Ontario. Hard work, tried and true skills and attention to detail are some of the reasons why Cornell Farms has become a favourite choice amoung shoppers here at the market.

You’ll find Cornell Farms and their quality products here every Wednesday from 3:30 to 6:30pm and again on Saturday from 8:00am to 1:00pm, where their booth located on the first floor on the east side of the building. Come see for yourself what makes this family so passionate about their products!
